Fidelio Collective

This concert brings together two powerful string quartets that explore passion, identity, and expressive intensity across a century of musical history. Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 2 in A minor, Op. 13 is a youthful yet deeply emotional work, inspired by Beethoven and infused with lyrical ardour and cyclical unity, its opening motto returning transformed across the movements. In striking contrast, George Walker’s String Quartet No. 1 speaks with a confident, modern voice, drawing on mid-20th-century idioms. Together, these works reveal the enduring expressive power of the string quartet as a medium for both charming introspection and contemporary urgency.
